The Cuckoo Clock

A cuckoo clock is a wall clock, usually weight and pendulum driven, that indicates the hour not through bells or chimes but by an imitation of cuckoo sound. Most have a small model bird that emerges in time along with the sound.

A lot of people think of the cuckoo clock as being Swiss. In fact its roots are not in Switzerland but in the Black Forest region of Germany.

Cuckoo clocks were invented in the first part of the 18th century. There is - as so often with these things - some uncertainty about who was the first person to come up with the idea. It is normally credited to Franz Anton Ketterer, from the Black Forest region. Ketterer also devised a way to produce the classic cuckoo sound.

The Cuckoo clock is one of the most favorite souvenirs in countries like Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. It is popular for its carvings, cuckoo birds decorations, and melodic cuckoo calls. Some are designed using different objects and some cuckoo clocks are even decorated with people or animals that celebrate the passing of every hour by circling through trap doors.

Today, the cuckoo clocks are one of the most popular ornamental clocks because of its decorative nature and functions. Inside the clocks, a set of fine brass clockworks are used to facilitate precise timekeeping functions. Its weights are also shaped like pine cones that usually dangle from the ends of chains and pendulums tipped with carvings of leaves. This feature adds to their traditional appearance but they still remain as modern, spring-driven cuckoo clocks.

If you are planning to buy one there are some things that you need to consider:

PRICE

Check if the price is worth the quality of the cuckoo clock. Don't just look at the decor, check the materials used.  Remember this is not just a home decor; its main function is a wall clock.

MATERIALS USED

It pays to ask questions since you are a buyer, ask the material used to make sure that it will last long and you will not regret purchasing one.

WARRANTY

This is actually the most important part of purchasing a cuckoo clock.  If it gives a good deal of warranty then go for it!  It is the after sale service that will prove the performance of one.
